Lead writers in health care content creation for digital and print while serving as an editorial representative across the organization.
Leadership – Follow health care trends and develop sources within the organization, assign projects to writers, and follow up with editing, scheduling, and performance measurement. Serve as the editorial and creative representative on numerous management groups spanning Kaiser Permanente. Successfully collaborate with media relations, 21 medical centers, national headquarters, a large multimedia department, physicians, members, and patients to create meaningful and lasting stories.
Content Creation – Conceive, write, develop, and edit a wide range of articles, scripts, and campaigns on topics including cardiac and cancer care, infectious diseases, and mental health and wellness. Adapt and market content to internal and external audiences to maximize its impact. Adhere to brand guidelines. Resulting communications have earned Bulldog and PRSA awards.
Managing Edior, 2004 to 2018
Created infrastructure for new print and web projects while building a successful editorial team.
Project Management – Managed 15 monthly 8-page internal newsletters, including working with editors in 12 geographical areas, a design vendor, and an off-site printer. Moved that print project online and co-designed internal and external websites several times over. Accomplishments included a year-long hospital digital signage project and multiple user surveys.
Team Development – History of hiring for and maintaining a strong, positive team, with employees staying long term or moving to media relations, journalism, or marketing. Founded the content team’s ethos of editorial excellence, speed, and service.

Co-created a leading online literary journal for micro stories.
Reviewed on average 1,000 stories monthly, publishing and promoting nearly 700. Interviewed writers, publicized stories on social media and nominated them for awards, and co-hosted readings at San Francisco Litcrawl.
Co-edited the anthology Nothing Short Of: Selected Tales from 100 Word Story (Outpost19, April 2018). Co-selected stories, edited each, obtained releases from 117 contributors, secured promotional endorsements. Participated in ongoing marketing of book.

Wrote and edited a wide range of print and online communications for employees.
Technology – Created speeches, edited manuscripts, and crafted internal communications for Schwab’s CIO. Wrote, edited, managed, and produced website for technologists, working with executives and employees. Shepherded a team of three freelancers. Led site through a major redesign, resulting in dramatically increased readership.
Retail – Produced daily news stories and feature pages for the firm-wide, award-winning online newsletter. Held a leadership position in coordinating evening production and shepherding interns and freelance staff. Wrote, edited, scheduled, and managed a monthly in-house newsletter for client-facing employees.
Advertising – Served as the sole copy editor at Schwab’s full-service, in-house advertising agency. Instituted style guides, trained and managed freelance editors, and reviewed all materials exiting the agency. Oversaw copy changes and final edits to multimillion-dollar ad campaigns; safeguarded external branding and image.

Created focused communications for a variety of professional arts organizations.
Headed the writing and development of The San Francisco Arts Commission’s first external communications pieces, including the production of a five-part brochure series, radio PSAs, press releases, and the creation of a newsletter.
Served as editorial support to California Poets in the Schools. Edited the organization’s newsletter to members, correspondence, and children’s poetry anthology.
Worked as Interim Business Manager on behalf of The Poetry Center and American Poetry Archives at San Francisco State University. Nation’s Cities Weekly
Managed a dual role in publications and grant administration.
Crafted weekly news articles and instituted a small cities column for Nation’s Cities Weekly, a primary publication for federal government news widely read by American mayors and members of U.S. city government. Managed a Department of Transportation program educating the public about the dangers of drunk driving. Worked with affiliates such as MADD to create printed materials and events. Renewed the grant for three times previous year’s amount.

Winner of the fiction chapbook contest at the University of South Carolina in 2021, with book published in 2022. With prize money, founded an annual scholarship at Albany High School for graduating seniors committed to studying creative writing at the university level.
